I started working at Arizona River Runners (ARR) in the winter of 2021, when my son, Robert, was just 3 years old. Because we had to play by the rules like everyone else, we had to wait until 2025, when he turned 8, to get him on the river. We’ve been camping as a family since he was a baby, and I knew he would be more than okay with sleeping out under the stars. But since he would be new to group travel, we decided to start with the 3 Day Escape, ARR’s shortest trip, to see how he would adhere to a schedule with many other people involved (spoiler: he did great!). Reflecting on the trip these past few months, I can honestly say it was one of the best family trips we’ve ever taken. If you’re considering taking your kids out on the river, whether they are 8 or 18, do it!
The ARR Experience: 3 Day Escape
The 3 Day Escape was perfect for our family with a young child. It offered a fantastic taste of the Grand Canyon’s wonders without being too long. As I mentioned, this was Robert’s first experience with group travel and the structured schedule that comes with it. Eating (or “being hungry” in kid terms) when meals are ready, sitting in your seat with PFD strapped when it’s time to go, helping the group as best you can in the duffel line before playing in the sand – all examples of new experiences for a kid that directly affect other guests.
The Guides Make the Trip – at the Ranch and on the River
The staff at the Bar 10 Ranch and our river guides were phenomenal! Once you arrive at the ranch and get your bearings, it’s the perfect place to be a kid – all the planned activities are great, but they also have the outside space and amenities for kids to run a little wild. Horseshoe pits, a basketball court, even a pickleball court (the biggest hit amongst kids and adults alike). Robert had a great time just being outside at the ranch with the other 9- and 10-year-old boys on the trip.
The river guides are truly next level. They were not only incredibly skilled at navigating the rapids but also fantastic storytellers, naturalists, and genuinely kind people. They made everyone, especially Robert and the other kids on the trip, feel safe, engaged, and excited about every aspect of the experience. They shared fascinating facts about the canyon’s geology, history, and wildlife, turning every bend in the river into a learning opportunity. They also shared their downtime, jumping in on the impromptu Can Jam and Wiffle ball games that inevitably popped up on the beach. At one point on the last day, Robert told me he wanted to be a river guide when he grew up! That really says a lot coming from an 8-year-old.
Rapids and Relaxation
The balance of thrilling rapids and peaceful floating was just right. The rapids were exhilarating, providing plenty of splashes and laughs, but our guides handled them with such expertise that we always felt secure and at ease. During the calmer sections, we had time to soak in the scenery, listen to the river, and simply enjoy being together. Robert made sure to sit next to us and also the other boys. They had a blast in the flatwater seeing who could spot the “whirlpools” (eddies) first, and also celebrating the wave hits that got them all soaked!
Delicious Meals and Plenty of Snacks
Having been on plenty of trips myself over the years as an employee, I knew the food was fresh and delicious. What I wasn’t sure about was how well Robert would take to it. He’s not the pickiest eater as far as kids go, but he definitely has his preferences. To our great surprise, he more or less ate everything that was put in front of him, even the guacamole appetizer at dinner on the beach (he doesn’t ever eat guac or avocados topside, and he’s not shy about reminding us every time we ask). He also developed a newfound love for PayDay bars, which are a staple on raft trips since there’s no chocolate to melt in the heat. From hearty breakfasts to riverside lunches and wonderful dinners cooked right on the beach, we ate incredibly well. The guides handled all the logistics, so all we had to do was relax and enjoy the incredible surroundings.
